Thrifty Treasure Tips for Food Photography Beginners

Thrifty Treasure Tips for Food Photography Beginners

Did you know that some of the best food photography props can be found in thrifty stores? This is one of my best kept secrets that I used to help me out on my food journey. First it started as a small hobby to an idea of collecting kitchen gadgets for food photography. On one visit the search was only to find cookware to use for a photo, which ended in finding this lovely teapot. The next step is how to correlate the teapot into something pertaining to food. To me a picture has to tell a story with a product by simply capturing the lighting of the design to create a perfect picture.

If you have never been to a thrift store it will be like an adventure for the first time. Make the visit into a treasure hunt, so try to invite a friend to come along to enjoy the fun.  Both of you can go to different stores and meet up to compare what you find. The first tip is to start collecting dishware to use for plating. For the most part, my visits are always satisfying when I find a baking pan to add to my collection. The treasure is finding a genuine piece like the two cups with the flower pattern.  Again you have to think outside the box as if you're looking for a piece of artwork to create something unique and authentic.

One fact is that most thrifty stores carry things like clothing, and sometimes furniture. So take advantage of searching throughout the stores and make a list.  For instance, you may see tables, baskets, and ceramic vases which could be used to set up a background prop. If you're on a tight budget, this is a great tip for newbies who are looking to start off. You might get lucky and find everything you need that fits your style. If you find something that is a treasure to you, attach a picture and share. Happy Plating!
